ABSTRACT

English as a Second and Foreign Language (ESL/EFL) speakers show heterogeneity in their educational background and purpose in using this language. As part of their formal education, the English language teaching materials they have been exposed to also show diversity. Textbooks published by global and/or local publishers may show variations in many aspects. This chapter shares a practical task that integrates Global Englishes into a pre-service EFL teacher education course to introduce senior student-teachers with published materials used around the world to teach any English in their local contexts. A group of teacher candidates in this task was assigned to analyze the language, topics, cultural aspects, and methodology in English language coursebooks to teach English in a different corner of the world. The task aims to raise student-teachers’ awareness of materials from various countries and cultures, to develop their understanding of the difference between the Anglo-American coursebooks and local textbooks, and to foster reflection on this experience.
