ABSTRACT

This practical application chapter will offer language educators several teaching activities under the theme of “World Englishes in the Oxford English Dictionary (OED),” to show them how to effectively engage with the OED’s World Englishes content in their teaching practice. The proposed teaching activities aim to raise awareness and understanding of the plurality of English. These activities include an overview of the functions of the OED, such as an exploration of the etymology of English words that come from other languages, and new and old entries from Asian and European languages, together with the pronunciation of these words. Through these activities, English educators will become aware of how English words of Asian origin have been borrowed or coined, how they have evolved, their usage and their place in the specific historical and cultural experiences of the people who use them. The present chapter hopes to provide English language teaching (ELT) educators with a meaningful opportunity to recognize the plurality of English and to accept emerging global varieties as being as valid as traditionally recognized varieties.
