ABSTRACT

With the changing role of English from Standard to what has been pluricentrically described as Global Englishes, this chapter describes some practical implementation of active learning activities to raise student-teachers’ awareness on Global Englishes’ issues in Thailand (with the potentials for application in other contexts as well). The chapter further addresses the misconception of cultural monocentricity in the new English era in order to prepare teachers for the current paradigm shift in English practices. Activities such as (1) in and out of classroom interactional discourse on different Englishes and (2) Global Englishes-based videos are some key practical active learning activities that can provide the possibilities for teachers to integrate and implement Global Englishes into practice. The authors believe that through the teacher’s integration of these activities in their teaching and learning, such activities would ultimately contribute to the teachers’ professional development in raising the awareness of the student-teachers on issues of variations in Englishes (as language users), and in turn, positively impact on how they teach their own students (as language teachers).
