ABSTRACT

Outdoor and Adventurous Activities is the term used in the Physical Education (PE) National Curriculum to describe common activities that can be taught on most school sites. This chapter focuses on school-based activities rather than the outdoor adventurous activities that would traditionally be delivered via a residential experience. The need to be able to trust others is an important starting point. The activities selected will be more successful if there is a positive working relationship between the young people in the class. Perhaps bonding sessions have already taken place to inform the selection of these suggested activities. Sensitivity should be considered as some young people with disabilities may find it hard to trust others, so scaffolding may be necessary, gradually progressing the ideas and skills as the young person becomes more confident. Safety and safe practice are paramount throughout, and only one knows what is appropriate for the young people in the PE lessons.
