ABSTRACT

This chapter offers a final reflection that looks forward to future developments in theory and practice in the arts therapies. The group of writers represented in this book set out to honour their clients’ stories through the use of expressive therapies and, in doing so, have paved the way for further innovation in the field. Neuroscience does not dictate the practice of the arts therapies, but it has a great deal to add to our understanding of our practice and our clients. Neuroscientists have not been able to locate the soul or the spirit or intuition, but many scientific discoveries have relied on that moment of sudden realisation to bring years of work to fruition. Arts therapists showed great resilience, along with most of humanity, during this period. There is a growing need to learn more about the use of virtual technology as this is likely to become more necessary for arts therapies practice in the future.
