ABSTRACT

The focus of this chapter is to demonstrate that a closer examination of the cyberpunk movement reveals feminist-queer cyberpunk has a lengthy and formative tradition that demands attention because it pushes against a dominant strain of hetero-masculinism. In other words, a brief overview of the field reveals that there exists feminist-queer roots and branches in cyberpunk that often go un(der)acknowledged by cyberpunk auteurs and aficionados. Admittedly, cyberpunk has a long way to go to escape its deep-seated masculinism, but as an ongoing global phenomenon carried out in multiple media and artistic outlets, cyberpunk provides opportunities for diverse narrative explorations and ongoing critical interrogations, particularly when these cyberpunk works are fueled by feminist-queer critical inquiry and praxis.
