ABSTRACT
From its beginnings in the nineteenth century, science fiction (SF) has been a genre supposedly dominated by male authors and readers. However, from the beginning, female authors have also speculated about the future and developed technological ideas in texts that today can be called science or speculative fiction. This chapter begins with insight into early German SF in general followed by information about the women’s movement and important activists around 1900. It then analyzes two texts by female authors Ellen Key and Therese Haupt that link the success of the women’s movement to the development of an anti-utopian world.
