ABSTRACT

Dystopia is generally represented through numerous literary works with a dystopian or alleged utopian tendency. However, it is not only the realm of literature in which we see dystopian projections. With the rapid progress of media and the growing commercial interest in this type of narrative, cinematic dystopias have come to occupy a significant position in the film industry. These films may vary in terms of their subject matter, but gender and phallocentric discourse play a vital role in the envisioned order. This chapter aims to highlight the place of dystopian narratives in cinema and analyse two critical dystopian films, namely Children of Men (2006) and The Lobster (2015), in terms of the representation of gender oppression and gender inequality by the hegemonic discourse through an intersectional reading to discuss the suitability of dystopian narrative for such approaches that go beyond binary thinking.
