ABSTRACT

This chapter explores five familiar epistemic phenomena that are rooted in technological innovations and have problematic implications for democracy. After looking closely at these issues, it proposes “intellectual character education” as a partial but promising remedy for some of the challenges posed by our rapidly evolving digital landscape. The suggestion is that teachers and schools can equip students to better negotiate this landscape by helping them develop virtues like curiosity, open-mindedness, intellectual carefulness, and intellectual autonomy.
