ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the use of church law in the Pentecostal tradition. Pentecostalism is seen in many guises with many different denominational groups. The chapter therefore gives a summary of the development of Pentecostalism from the beginning of the twentieth century in the context of the United Kingdom. It takes as a case study the Church of God of Prophecy UK, an international denomination operating in over 135 countries, which was established in 1903 as part of the growth of classical Pentecostalism. The case study examines the use of church law within this denomination in the light of the Principles of Christian Law. The chapter also briefly reflects on similarities in the use of church law across the Pentecostal denominations. The commitment of several Pentecostal denominations to follow Scripture helps to explain similarities in the development and use of law, which the communities share.
