ABSTRACT
This chapter traces the author’s experiences and impressions of a series of official commemorative events of the Armistice in Delhi, India. He weaves together an account that draws on his own relationship with the First World War narrative in his native Australia, where he had been Principal Historian at the Australia War Memorial, as well as efforts in India to commemorate the conflict and the tensions implicit in this process. The chapter concludes that Armistice commemoration in Delhi is enacted through what is essentially a British ceremony in an Indian setting, and thus questions the relevance of these events for contemporary India.
