ABSTRACT

The Centenary of the Great War was the subject of unprecedented commemorations in Belgium. While most of the focus was on 2014, there was also an emphasis on 2018. This chapter examines the commemoration of the centenary of the Armistice in three Belgian cities: Brussels, Liège and Mons. It addresses three areas: first, the preparation of these commemorations, the aims pursued, and the means allocated; second, the commemorations themselves, the types of events organised, the actors and speeches, the places and sounds; finally, the reception of these commemorations, including how they were perceived by the public, in the media and on social networks.
