ABSTRACT
This chapter adopts the perspective of a tourist on a short journey to Vienna as the auto-ethnographic starting point. By visiting three public exhibitions, the author encounters an Austrian narrative about the end of the First World War in that country, and also reflects on his own first-hand encounters with this narrative. He attends to the experiential and affective qualities of memory, concluding that without considering how it feels to be immersed in the commemorative context, important aspects of these public events can be overlooked.
