ABSTRACT

Japanese cuisine is gaining popularity all over the world and ranks as the ‘most popular foreign cuisine’, at least according to a 2013 survey conducted by the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. This chapter focuses on Japanese women employed in the Japanese food sector in Dusseldorf. It discusses the history and status quo of the Japanese community and the Japanese foodscape in Dusseldorf as well as their correlation through a review of the literature. The Japanese community and its development led the growth, diversification and amount of Japanese eateries in Dusseldorf and vice versa. The chapter examines the questions of why Japanese women choose to work in Düsseldorf’s Japanese food sector, in how far this decision correlates with their decision to move abroad and where these women experience feelings of belonging, of being ‘home’ in the Japanese community.
