ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with a material culture approach to the study, in particular, of the life and migration history of two Moroccan migrant women and of some of the food habits that they exert in the migration context, that is characterized by diffused processes of ethnic minoritization. It shows how Kalila and Mounia express their will to differentiate themselves from a stereotypical image of Moroccan migrants in Italy that is spread in the dominant mainstream discourse and that they, in their turn, contribute to shape through their narratives. Kalila narrated her life experiences and her culinary practices by often resorting to the notion of ‘normality’ that she associated to what she can see happening around her in terms of more frequent cultural habits. Kalila distinguished herself from a particular image of Moroccan diaspora that she had, which was influenced by stereotyped images spread by and within the dominant mainstream discourse.
