ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author builds on this organizational foundation, highlighting the advantages of writing metadata about our photo files, which are then searchable in our operating system and editing software. Using a common spreadsheet is a great way to enhance our metadata and to keep information readily at hand. Spreadsheets offer a systematic way to record information about each of our images that our camera and our image editing software cannot store. Again, Crowder can access these metadata by right-clicking the file’s icon and exploring the file’s properties. Being trained in the anthropology of visual communication, photographs have always been an intrinsic part of our work. Data mining, a term usually reserved for quantitative data, refers to revisiting old data with new questions to find new nuggets of information. The author ends with an introduction to various applications available for free and to purchase that help people further explore our photographs and videos.
