ABSTRACT

This chapter describes a peacebuilding strategy for addressing social media threats, including policy and action recommendations for governments, tech companies, legacy media and civil society. A peacebuilding plan for tech builds on the best practices of peacebuilding to solve intractable conflicts. Peacebuilding requires a multi-stakeholder inclusive effort involving multiple approaches at all levels of society. This chapter analyses stakeholder interests and roles in addressing social media challenges and opportunities. It outlines a wide range of strategies, from government regulation and taxation to redesigning platforms, increasing and improving platform moderation, fact-checking, removing legacy media paywalls during critical periods, innovative digital peacebuilding efforts to improve civil discourse and coordinated digital media literacy strategies. Each stakeholder can contribute part of the solution to social media threats.
