ABSTRACT

Chapter 18 reports on a longitudinal study that uses a corpus of disciplinary writing tasks submitted by L2 English writers at two points in time separated by two years. The study examines two phrasal complexity features (attributive adjectives and pre-modifying nouns) and two dependent-clause complexity features (adverbial clauses and relative clauses). The results provide additional support for the hypothesized sequence proposed in Chapter 14, showing an increased use of phrasal modification and decreased use of clausal embedding over time.
