ABSTRACT

The earliest civilisational achievement in the region dates back to that of the Indus Valley, as the archaeological site of Mohenjo-daro in Pakistan, built c. 2500 BCE, stands to testify. It was here in the Indus Valley that farming villages appeared in 7000 BCE. Women’s rights activists assert that the deep-rooted problem of sexual assault in India is more of a social and cultural problem rather than an issue to be settled by law enforcement. The success of the sociodrama partly lay in the choice of a culturally relevant story, i.e. Shat Bhai Chompa, which is a Bengali bed-time rupakatha (fairytale) told to children, involving fantastic characters and events. The critical purchase of the discourse lies in the wide range of practices and their critical underpinnings that attempt to challenge the normative in South Asia, and thereby change bits and pieces of this anciently modern terrain.
