ABSTRACT

This chapter will discuss four principle conceptual premises – somatics, kinesics, proxemics, and haptics as tools for addressing the survivors’ mental and physical vulnerabilities by first creating a somatic map on which the bodies of survivors place themselves with and vis-a-vis others. It analyzes proxemic and gaze behaviour as socially identified and defined markers of the way human beings share spaces with other beings in society. The chapter aims to suggest a pedagogy of dance and movement therapy. It aims to deal with principal conceptual strands coming out of understandings/concerns, i.e. somatics, kinesics, proxemics and haptics that may be linked to the recovery processes designed specifically for survivors of sex trafficking, and resultant abuse and violence. The use of the kinetic-cognitive powers of dance has been known to create an effect on psycho-social rehabilitation in many cases. The work of Dance and movement therapy is premised on creating processes through which survivors are helped to identify and address their vulnerabilities.
