ABSTRACT

Members of the transgender community in Bangladesh are known as hijras. Hijras are a socially neglected community in Bangladesh. Their rights to live equally like other citizens of the country have not yet been established. Applied folk theatre as an artistic communication at the present time plays a significant socio-cultural role, both as active tradition bearer and as a performance vehicle for trained artists or theatre workers. Alternative Living Theatre was formed by Probir Guha on 25 May 1977. Guha had been active in radical left politics as a means to connect to the masses before he rejected it in favour of politically conscious participatory theatre. Tehrik-e-Niswan began its cultural interventions in the late 1970s as a political cultural action group doing street performances in low-income areas of Karachi, Pakistan, with the basic idea that cultural conditions need to be created that would ensure the maximum realisation of the human potential, evoke new aspirations and liberate the mind.
