ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the "Alone We Stand" project carried out by Al-Harah Theater, Beit Jala, Palestine, and partners concerning women over the age of 30 who are either single, divorced, or widowed. The project was carried out through three main activities: research, the play, and workshops, which will all be described in the chapter. It was successful in that it reached a large number of people in Palestine and internationally to promote awareness about a specific category of women who suffer gender inequality and their life experiences. The chapter also refers to some existing relevant literature to give a theoretical context to the various parts of the project narrative. Palestinian performing arts and culture are relevant to enhancing national identity, women’s empowerment, and freedom of expression. Al-Harah Theater has been committed to building and maintaining a civil society that emphasizes human rights, democracy, and freedom of expression through working directly with children, youth, and older age groups.
