ABSTRACT

By analysing previous research, sport policy documents, and material used in coach education programmes, this chapter examines how gender-political discourses have shaped the development of gender equity in Norwegian sports coaching, and, in particular, the empowerment of women coaches in Norwegian sports organizations. Empirically, the chapter focuses on gender-political discourses and developmental trajectories from 1970 to 2020. The chapter’s central argument is that a dual strategy consisting of formal regulations, such as the introduction of gender quotas and women-centred approaches to preferential treatment, is needed to recruit and empower women coaches in sport. Political discourses directed towards gender mainstreaming appear to result in lower numbers of women coaches in sports organizations.
