ABSTRACT

Sport managers view human resources as the capital where managers must spend time enhancing individual development to contribute to performance and productivity. In a context where sport managers must strategically use their resources to ensure efficient policy and practice, it is important to consider the role that technology plays within the management of human resources. Specifically, the evolution of strategic human resource management due to big data and artificial intelligence technologies has emphasized that new technology can positively impact performance. This chapter discusses e-HRM as a strategic function of managing human resources where new technology can be leveraged to improve efficiency and communication between personnel and the organization. Moreover, these technologies should be carefully considered to ensure that efficiency is matched with effectiveness to link e-HRM to inclusive and strategic organizational values. The technology-organization-environment (TOE) framework is used within the chapter to outline the context of e-HRM, its strategic use in sport, and applicable case studies that demonstrate the implementation of e-HRM in sport management practice. The cases presented discuss organizational and environmental characteristics that interact when applying technology in sport. The chapter concludes with directions for future research with a focus on the digital ecosystem surrounding e-HRM.
