ABSTRACT

Athletes who have overcome physical, mental, and/or social barriers to excel in sport are often presumed to be exceptionally resilient. But what happens when someone with a history of succeeding through these challenges becomes injured? Para athletes are often overlooked in sport research, and very little is known about the psychological factors that influence their injury risk or rehabilitation. This chapter explores the meaning of injury in this population and discusses the unique experiences of Para athletes when navigating the injury and return to sport process. We introduce some common narratives that emerge from and are applied to, Para sport and how these can shape psychological responses to injury within this unique context.
