ABSTRACT

This chapter identifies and explores the concept of globalisation in relation to fashion and textiles, identifying some of the global brand leaders in the field. It also discusses sustainability impacts of globalisation, including environmental pollution air, water and land, waste, wastewater in developing countries, as well as poverty-related impacts such as low wages, child labour, forced labour, unsafe working conditions, etc. Globalisation of the fashion industry therefore impacts on the environment as well as poverty and development. The chapter explores the main challenges facing the global fashion industry from climate change in becoming more environmentally sustainable. It is also important to point out that where history demonstrates the extent to which a nation-state has been affected by the onset of globalisation, it shows that its status has grown in importance not diminished.
