ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the edited collection with a discussion of key themes in previous work on gender, disaster, climate change, and intersectionality in the Global North. The authors trace the historical development of research on these topics, identifying major trends and turning points. Next, they provide an overview of the contributions in the current volume. Each chapter addresses aspects of intersectional analysis—from materiality and discourse to identity and experience. Power and policy are major themes throughout, with authors providing various strategies to address the “status quo” of climate change impacts and adaptive approaches. The chapter concludes with the importance of epistemological diversity, experiential knowledge, and multiple ways of knowing to better understand the reality of climate change and its multifaceted effects in everyday life.
