ABSTRACT
This chapter explores definitions of the medical and social models of disability and considers how they are translated into policy and practice across the education, health and social care sectors. How the models of disability are reflected in the practices of professional agencies will be presented through the accounts of parents. Their impact on families will be considered alongside suggestions of how professionals can develop their effectiveness through enhanced knowledge and understanding.
