ABSTRACT

Kathi, a woman in her late-40s, approaches after a recent talk we gave on the mental game at a local triathlon club. Kathi shares that in some of her recent Ironman attempts, the swim has been a miserable experience. Growing up a runner made picking up cycling a bit easier, but swimming has never been a natural strength. Kathi’s training group has been very supportive, but she feels the weight of being one of the only women in the group and the only person to DNF on her own. Outside her sport, Kathi is a software engineer who was working for a technology company that recently downsized, and as one of the less experienced engineers, she was let go about six months ago.
