ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses a case which involves a swimmer named Marina, who is currently a first-year collegiate athlete. Marina has always been a mature, powerful swimmer with tremendous potential. In Marina’s view, she started her sport late and had to work hard to “catch up” to those around her. Marina began swimming when she was four years old but only started competitive swimming at fourteen. Outside of swimming, Marina is a dedicated student who enjoys spending time with her family, friends, and boyfriend. At the club level, Marina trained six days per week under the direction of a young female coach, with whom she formed a unique bond and friendship. The training schedule and intensity of practices cause Marina’s back injury to flare up. She feels overwhelmed by her pain but continues to train hard and hides her discomfort.
