ABSTRACT

This chapter explores how an urban high school with a Science, Technology, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) theme approached racialized student experiences as learning opportunities. The chapter documents curricular and pedagogical practices, and the mission of the STEAM Academy. Findings suggest that the selection and recruitment of more African American/Black and culturally competent teachers and school partners are important in promoting a more productive and positive learning experience for students. In addition, administrators should integrate corporate ethics into their social justice curriculum. Finally, it is recommended that students participate in entrepreneurship courses to empower students to create their own socially conscious organizations, including profit and non-profit, with the potential to transform their own communities in positive ways.
