ABSTRACT

This chapter starts with a discussion on the implications of considering the Learning Sciences as an interdiscipline, which marks an important distinction between this field and Educational Technology. The field of Educational Technology is one of the disciplines the Learning Sciences draws upon – one that shares a special bond as it emphasizes “some aspects of learning”. Educational Technology has evolved as a field, redefining its boundaries to be more inclusive addressing emergent concerns, as it can be noticed in the changes of the way it has been defined. Despite current approaches in Educational Technology addressing emergent concerns, such as the redefinition of competencies and the consideration of sociopolitical factors, there is still a sharp contrast with the Learning Sciences in terms of plurality as an interdiscipline. Technologies in the classroom have changed from being computer- and projector-driven “to technologies for use beyond the traditional classroom to include learning management systems, hand-held mobile devices, and virtual worlds”.
