ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the soundscape of the album version of Seal's “Crazy” with particular reference to the creative strategies of producer Trevor Horn. The analysis focuses on the spatiality and cinematic production staging of the recording with contextual reference to other works by both Horn and Seal. A key feature within the song's sound stage is the multiplicity of overdubbed performances, and the assessment considers the ways in which the occupancy of diverse aural spaces affects and contributes to the record's holistic sonic coherence. In effect, the chapter examines “Crazy” as a performative experience at musical, technological, and conceptual aesthetic levels, underscoring its scenic construction to maximize sonic and emotional impact.
