ABSTRACT

The remaining Africans in Guangzhou faced a new challenge in early 2020. The discriminatory institutional policies and actions against them once again grabbed the attention of the world, most recently during the city’s frantic war against the coronavirus epidemic. The mistreatment of people of African descent in Guangzhou obviously involved institutional discrimination and this is also reflected in some other social policies and practices across China. Madison notes, most Chinese people generally see black people as they appear in pop culture, which is American dominated, and in Hollywood productions which are full of racial myths about people of colour. To recap Alice Walker’s message: colourism in black communities is an evil, and it must be stopped in order for African Americans to progress as a people. To confront such sheer ignorance, apathy, and insensitivity, it is imperative to introduce knowledge, cultivate compassion, and educate for inclusivity.
