ABSTRACT

In the twenty-first century, English is used by speakers with much more diverse backgrounds and in much more varied situations than ever before. As a result, English language teaching (ELT) has to change and reflect this diversity by including more Global Englishes (Rose & Galloway, 2019) in ELT. This chapter investigates the role of Global Englishes in ELT and teacher education in the German state of Bavaria. An analysis of the development of Bavarian ELT curricula and teacher training over time identifies some progress, on the one hand, but also many missed opportunities, particularly concerning the newest version of the curriculum, on the other hand. The findings of this study make it clear that future reforms are necessary to adapt ELT in Bavaria better to the contemporary sociolinguistic reality and the needs of twenty-first-century learners of English.
