ABSTRACT

This chapter describes several instances of apparent moraic onset geminates in Austronesian languages. The existence of moraic onsets in the world’s languages remains a controversial topic, but moraic onsets may be found in languages where geminate consonants are utilized to maintain a minimal word. Examples from existing literature include Pattani Malay, Marshallese, and Chuukese, but these oft-cited examples are not the only cases where moraic onset geminates may be found in Austronesian. Additional examples come from the Austronesian languages Kiput, Kayan, Sekapan, and Ngadha. Examples from these languages are analyzed here as having moraic onset geminates.
