ABSTRACT

This chapter analyses the rationale and processes behind the establishment of a new international MA programme in Sámi Journalism with an Indigenous Perspective established at Sámi Allaskuvla or the Sámi University College in Guovdageaidnu, Norway, in 2014. The programme’s main objective was to raise the academic status and research-based competence of Indigenous journalism in a Sámi context, and to train Indigenous and Sámi journalists. Written by a group of eminent Sámi and non-Sámi media and communication scholars who have had an active role in building the program at Sámi Allaskuvla, the chapter provides a comprehensive analysis of the intellectual and socio-political background behind the program, the ambitions, challenges and discussions that have framed the program’s development, and a critical appraisal of the program’s impact so far. In so doing, the chapter offers important analytical insights to the ways in which Sámification of knowledge production – in both research and journalism – continues to be pursued today, within the framework of higher education.
