ABSTRACT

The Black Lives Matter Meditation for Healing Racial Trauma was developed in August 2016, in response to the need for an immediate and accessible strategy for coping with and healing from racism. This chapter details the development of the 17-minute guided meditation. The author explicates the evidence-base of the meditation's three-part approach to healing: mindfulness, affirmation, and metta. A discussion of the intention for the meditation's use in practice and training follows. Throughout, selected aspects of the author's training as a psychologist and personal background that informed the creation of this intervention are also discussed, along with research-based and anecdotal responses to the meditation.
