ABSTRACT

The commercialisation of space is at the heart of current discussions within the global space economy and is visible in various aspects of the space industry. This chapter will show the dynamics and mechanisms of PPPs (private-public partnerships) and foreign direct investments (FDIs) and what they demonstrate from an economic and political perspective. The space sector attracts different actors: states, private companies and mixed-market organisations. Indeed, the sector, which attracts individuals in search of new discoveries for humanity, is also very attractive to states in search of the power gained from space conquest, and to companies and institutions in search of profits. This is why it is very important to understand the importance of FDIs between private companies and public institutions operating in the space industry. Indeed, since the last century, space research and missions have increased significantly, which has greatly attracted more and more organisation, as it has become possible to generate a lot of profit from space research and missions. This chapter helps to better understand the issues and outcomes of these partnerships.
