ABSTRACT

The increase in the number of Nigerian irregular migrants to Europe via the Mediterranean route is a topical issue in migration policy discourse. Through a combination of primary and secondary sources, the chapter explores the push and pull factors behind irregular migration from Nigeria to Southern Europe. Benin City is identified as one of the major hotspots of irregular migration in Nigeria and Italy as the most preferred destination country in Europe for these irregular migrants. The chapter also traces the perilous journeys undertaken by irregular migrants from Benin City to Europe. The presence of a strong Nigerian kinship network and the proximity of Italy to the Mediterranean Sea are acknowledged as some of the pull factors driving irregular Nigerian migrants to Italy. The chapter suggests recommendations ranging from the empowerment of potential irregular migrants to effective border management so as to address the migration challenge under consideration.
