ABSTRACT

That migration in the southern African region has a long history is well documented. This chapter is located within this context and further argues that the continued selectivity of migration regimes in the region, which highlights the securitisation of migration is antithetical to goals of free human mobility. Instead it results in the creation of gated communities, which entrench and strengthen borders, which in turn engenders irregular migrations and the attendant problems. This does not auger well for a region and continent which is moving towards regional and continental integration respectively.
