ABSTRACT

Though Carl Hiaasen is best known for his comic crime fiction filled with outrageous characters, outlandish situations, and over-the-top humour, he’s also deadly serious about many issues, chief among them the sad destruction of much of the natural environment in his home state of Florida. Hiaasen fell in love with Florida’s verdant wetlands, serene waterways, and teeming wildlife at an early age. Since then, he has devoted his entire professional career, first as an investigative reporter, then a newspaper columnist, and now a bestselling crime novelist to celebrating it, bemoaning its destruction, and encouraging efforts to save as much of what’s left as possible.
