ABSTRACT

Representations of the sea in Nordic noir telenovels Trapped (Iceland, 2015-2019) and Twin (Norway, 2019) exemplify the contemporary turn towards seeing non- and more-than-human actors as decisive protagonists in the unfolding of a cross-species drama. The Nordic “big deep” suggests something more complicated than just an existential metaphor. Incorporating the work of Bruno Latour, particular scrutiny is given here to the possible transition – of any agent – from predictable intermediary to unreliable mediator. Ultimately, Scandi-noir realises a pluriagential configuration with a distinct lack of interest (or faith) in human agendas.
