ABSTRACT

Science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) has a huge impact on the social fabric of our world and in recent decades, computer science has had an outsized impact. However, few university STEM classes critique their own field. DPD provides a rigorous framework for questioning the differential impact of a given discipline, and, as I argue, is best used this way: as a lens through which to view your field. In this chapter, I reflect on two DPD teaching experiences in STEM classrooms – one in which DPD was taught as a standalone subject, and another which delved into the power dynamics of surveillance as an introduction to digital security.
