ABSTRACT

Oregon State University’s Difference, Power, and Discrimination Program (DPD) emerged from a shared student and faculty concern for curriculum transformation that centered issues of power, inclusion, equity, and justice. The most unique contribution of the DPD Program to curriculum transformation has been the radical reorganization of course content around social justice. A kinesiology instructor examines power and privilege in sport; an agriculture professor centers the ecosystem science of Pacific Northwest Indigenous people. The relevance of the DPD model for social justice educators has become even more evident as recent events including the murder of George Floyd by Minneapolis police officers and the resurgence of nationwide Black Lives Matter protests as well as the disproportionate impact of Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) on minoritized communities, have highlighted the persistence of racial injustice in this country.
