ABSTRACT

The civil war in Syria has been a continuation of popular uprisings called Arab Spring in 2011. First emerged in Tunisia as a reaction to social, political, and economic standards of living in 2010, popular uprisings spread to Egypt, Libya, and the Gulf countries in a short time. Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) was one of them, which established a Caliphate state in certain regions under its control in Syria. This chapter aims to explore the changing nature of financing terrorism and the instrumentalisation of historical artefacts in the funding of terrorist organisations within the context of the ISIS case. The concept of financing terrorism is argued. The changing tools of terrorist organisations to fund their operations are also studied. The chapter discusses the emergence of ISIS and its rise in Syria. The significant sources of the organisation's revenue and the significance of the antiquities black market are discussed.
