ABSTRACT

There are many excellent works that examine the overall topic of countering the financing of terrorism (CFT). This chapter explores the United States and the war on terrorist financing. The United States has performed a critical role in this vital struggle and continues to engage in CFT for several reasons. First, the United States maintains a large presence in the global economy. Second, the United States led in establishing global standards for addressing the challenge of CFT. The chapter covers both of these precedents, summarises the international context, and then delves into specific US CFT measures that have largely emerged after the terrorist attacks of 9/11. It concludes by assessing the results of US efforts in the war on terrorist financing, acknowledging that much progress has been made while highlighting the many unintended consequences of US CFT developments and the numerous remaining challenges facing the United States and the war on terrorist financing.
