ABSTRACT

Recent terrorist attacks in Asia, Europe, North America, and beyond as well as the incessant movement of radicalised individuals from previously untouched jurisdictions, for example, the Caribbean, underline the need for global governments to work cohesively to prevent and fight terrorism. This chapter contextualises the concept of terrorist financing (also known as combating the financing of terrorism (CFT) and counter-financing of terrorism) from a Caribbean perspective and documents the sources, transfer mechanisms, and measures used to counter terrorism funding in the region. The challenges associated with countering terrorism financing are also explored as this is a contributing factor that has exacerbated the funding of nefarious activities by these illicit groups. The chapter sheds light on terrorist funding and efforts to counter the phenomenon by using a Caribbean ontology. Terrorism is increasingly becoming a global problem as a result of the continuing phenomenon of globalisation that is continuing at a rapid pace in the contemporary era.
