ABSTRACT

The management of illicit profits of crime and terrorist financing is the result of the combination of the intensity of socio-economic activities brought by globalisation and the geopolitical context. General characteristics of criminal and terrorist financing must be coupled with the geographical position of South America and its consequences. South America, particularly for trafficking, occupies a valuable point between North America, Africa, Europe, and Asia. Therefore, the assessment of criminal and terrorist financing requires an approach that is political and wider than the tools put in place to counter it. The threat evolves in time along with global finance and the context in which criminal organisations operate. Terrorism and crime follow different logic and goals, this is why they require to be analysed separately. However, they might share advantages and disadvantages of the legislation being put in place against them.
