ABSTRACT

Usha Nagpal was related to Joginder Paul through his marriage to her aunt, her father’s younger sister, Krishna Paul (nee Nagpal). She wrote this personal piece especially for the volume as a tribute to the man and writer whom she considered a hero and inspiration all her life. This piece, included under the section “Writings on Joginder Paul’s Life,” brings in an angle to Paul very different to any included in the book by placing the man in Nairobi within a family and community, and his gradual growth into a powerful writer. The essay begins with a reference to Paul’s death and goes on to recount how he will remain immortal because of his unique contribution to the lives of others as a human being as also through his writings. Usha Nagpal first met Paul when she was only 10 years old and over the course of time also translated some of his fiction. An insider to the Nagpal family that Paul became a part of after his marriage to Krishna, Usha Nagpal shares some moments from their lives which puts the spotlight on how the family received the writer and how he himself carefully positioned himself in it.
